Personal Experience & Biography

Arumugam has over thirty-five years of experience in information technology and management, excelling as both a professor and technology entrepreneur. His career began at L&T Ltd, followed by positions at Digital Equipment Corporation, USA, and IBM Watson’s Scientific Computing Research Lab, later with the World Bank as a procurement specialist at Washington DC. Post-World Bank, he ventured into entrepreneurship, founding Broadline, an IT company specializing in Governance, Logistics & SCM, and Industrial Automation, with a particular emphasis on AI partnering with Oracle, SAP, SIEMENS.

As fellow of IBM, Arumugam has been recognized for his successful research initiatives and mission-critical projects in Asia and the USA. He serves as Chairman/Director/Advisor for public enterprises and corporates in India and USA. He holds an MTech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Madras, a PhD in AI & Neural Network from the University of Toronto, and a PhD in Supply Chain Management from Madras University.

Arumugam designed and developed Health Logistics and SCM for the State of Tamil Nadu, a model later adopted by other Indian states and the union government. This work received acclaim from the World Bank, WHO, DFID, DANIDA, and UNAIDS.

He has also designed and implemented energy and utilities reforms in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, supporting their process systems since 2000.

Leveraging SIEMENS digital expertise, he developed a proposal for an Industry Centre of Excellence based on I4.0. This proposal was well-received by the Government of Tamil Nadu, leading to the formation of the not-for-profit company TANSAM, which has since become a showcase of technology for visitors from SMBs, large industrial houses, Startups, and learners across India. We have trained over 60000 students and professionals last year. He has recently patented the following applications achieving notable revenues

  • Oxygen Optimiser: Device that saves up to 50% oxygen for non-invasive patients.
  • Tea leaf quality system to inspect the tea leaf quality, moisture content, weight and presence of foreign particles in leaves delivered to factories.
  • AI based COBOT inspection systemto inspect components of the shop floor, the pr ocess is not light dependentand user configurable
  • Food preservation system: A replacement for cold storage for fruits and vegetables, this will help our farmers to preserve fresh produce at a fraction of the cost.

His academic roles include Adjunct Professor of Supply Chain at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Zaragoza Logistics Center, Spain, and Visiting Professor of Technology at the Centre for Robotics and Neural Science, Plymouth University, UK, since 2012, and as visiting professor at IIM. He played a key role in establishing Tamil chairs at Harvard University and the University of Toronto, earning recognition for his contributions. A regular speaker at global conferences, his expertise spans Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Logistics & Supply Chain Management, and E-Governance.

Arumugam has been honored with the Prime Minister’s E-Governance Innovation Award in 2000, the Luther L Terry Award, USA, the IEEE Award for Innovation in Bridging of Servers, the IABC – Color Award from Chicago, USA in 2022, and the Pioneer Award for AI at the Computer History Museum, Silicon Valley in 2023.
